The drug Methotrexate is a medication, which helps to prevent the cells’ division. This drug is often used for the treatment of ectopic pregnancy. Methotrexate is taken in the form of an injection, and as for ectopic pregnancy, a single dose of the drug Methotrexate is usually needed.
To control the level of pregnancy hormone in the blood you will need to do a blood test. The drug Methotrexate is aimed at the terminating of pregnancy, thus, the level of the pregnancy hormone in the blood is decreased. This process usually occurs within 2-4 days. After that, you will be given a blood test again and the doctor will determine whether you need another injection of the drug Methotrexate or not.
In order to monitor your health condition, you will probably take more blood tests within 2-3 weeks, if your doctor will recommend it to you.
After taking a Methotrexate injection, you may experience the following symptoms: vaginal bleeding; slight cramps and abdominal pain.
Taking the drug Methotrexate can cause the occurrence of the following side effects: the loss of appetite; mouth ulcers; nausea and vomiting; strong exhaustion; severe headache; hair loss; redness, swelling and pain in the injection area; sleeping problems; diarrhea.
If, after taking it, you feel severe nausea, then it is recommended to drink more clear liquids and eat starchy food every 15 minutes. To prevent the inflammation of the mouth, you should brush your teeth at least 2 times a day with soft toothpaste and rinse your mouth about 4 times a day with water. It is not recommended to eat hot or spicy products.
If you are experiencing severe pain, then you can take the drug Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen. It is recommended to take Acetaminophen within 2 days after taking the Methotrexate medication. If the medication does not work, then consult with your doctor about medicines that you are allowed to take in your situation.
Use a heating pad to reduce cramps, which can be painful. Taking a hot bath can also help to reduce the cramps.
If, after taking Methotrexate, you experience the following symptoms, then you should immediately seek medical help: the loss of consciousness; swelling of the face; severe vaginal bleeding; breathing problems.
Talk to your doctor if you have: blood in your stool; sudden abdominal pain or cramps; yellowing of the skin and eyes; contraction when urinating; severe skin rashes; any bleeding that is not typical for you; cough and sore throat; severe vaginal bleeding.
After you receive the medicine, you should not become pregnant for at least 3 months after the injection of Methotrexate. Consult your doctor if you have any questions about birth control.
After you go to the toilet, you should always wash your hands, since the drug Methotrexate can make the immune system weaker and it may be difficult for your body to fight with any infections.
Follow all the recommendations of your doctor, and do not do the actions, which are forbidden during your treatment. They may include the following actions: drinking more than 1 drink of alcohol per day during a week; having sexual intercourse until your doctor tells you that your treatment is over; taking drugs such as Penicillin, Minocycline, Tetracycline, and Aspirin for 2 days after taking the injection of the drug Methotrexate.
It is necessary to tell your doctor everything about your state and if you experience negative symptoms. It is important that the doctor should control your treatment.
